ASTM A193 Grade B7 Ceramic Coated Bolts

Chrome Moly Alloy Steel

Ceramic coating for industrial fasteners

Ceramic-filled and ceramic-polymer barrier coatings can be formulated for corrosion, chemical or temperature exposure. The term covers many different technologies, so selection must be based on a named, qualified system rather than the generic description. Substrate preparation and curing are as important as the top layer.

Qualification first

Review the manufacturer’s data for continuous and peak temperature, chemical resistance, adhesion, flexibility and corrosion testing. Confirm that the data applies to the specified thickness and steel substrate.

Dimensional control

Threads, recesses and bearing faces need a defined coating allowance. State the final gauging requirement, masking areas and mating component condition before production begins.

Assembly behaviour

Some systems include a lubricious layer while others do not. Establish the friction condition, tightening procedure and whether local coating damage at bearing surfaces is acceptable.

Project specification checklist

Engineering note: Ask for evidence tied to the exact coating build-up. Marketing labels such as “ceramic” do not establish suitability for a pressure joint or a particular chemical environment.
