PTFE-based coating: design and ordering guide

PTFE-based fastener systems combine a corrosion-resistant base layer with a low-friction topcoat. They are often considered for flanged joints and maintenance-sensitive equipment where controlled assembly and easier disassembly are valued. “PTFE coated” is a family description, so the approved coating system and performance criteria must be named.

Torque implications

Low friction can produce much higher bolt load at the same torque than a dry or differently lubricated fastener. Use a torque value developed for the selected coating, nut, washer and joint; never substitute a generic table without engineering validation.

Service compatibility

Temperature, pressure, chemical contact, UV exposure and immersion can affect different coating layers in different ways. Confirm limits with the coating-system data and the project material specification.

Handling and repair

Threads, points and wrenching surfaces can be damaged during transport and assembly. Define acceptable touch-up, holiday testing where relevant, thread gauging and protective packing.

Define these requirements

Engineering note: Coating data and tightening procedure must be evaluated together. A visually similar PTFE finish may have materially different friction and corrosion performance.
